Dr. J’s Health Tip of the Week:  The flu shot is overhyped and oversold as the be all and end all to preventing flu.  As a matter of fact, it has been widely reported in the news media, that the last few years of flu shot statistics show that the flu shot was less than effective at preventing the flu.  The flu shot is most effective at padding the bottom line of the drug companies that manufacture this vaccine.  The marketing campaigns for promoting the flu vaccine are outstanding.  Every drug store and supermarket in the area has banners and signs with the boldly printed words “Flu Shot Here.”   If this was summer time I would half expect to see a flying banner airplane canvassing our local beaches with the flu shot message.  The bottom line is with a little investigation, the general public can take actions steps that actually work to prevent the flu.  Much research on Vitamin D3 (the sunshine vitamin) has shown that D3 enhances immune system function.  It makes sense.  Why do you think the flu season is in the winter time?  There is less sunshine exposure in the winter months.  In addition, eating whole foods, exercising on a regular basis, getting enough sleep and other vitamin supplementation (Vitamin C) have all been shown to have beneficial effects on immune system function.  If your immune system is functioning at a higher level you will not only have less incidence of flu, but other viruses as well.

Thought for the Week:  The best six doctors anywhere, And no one can deny it, Are sunshine, water, rest, and air, Exercise and diet. These six will gladly you attend, If only you are willing, Your mind they'll ease.  Your will they'll mend.  And charge you not a shilling.
~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

Chiropractic Thought for the Week:  In addition to vitamin D3, Vitamin C and Oregano Oil (everyone needs this in there medicine cabinet), many other alternative therapies can help keep your body healthier by enhancing immune system function.  Acupuncture, massage and yoga all have increased benefits to building immune system function.  Chiropractic is probably one of the best things out there for sickness prevention via the spinal adjustment.  It’s not a treatment for colds and flu, but statistics show that patients under regular chiropractic care, at least 1 x per month are healthier than those that are not.  Why?  Chiropractic adjustments remove spinal nerve stress which compromises immune system function. The chiropractic adjustment can help your body work better and be healthier.
