Popeye Was Correct

In light of all the bad news about spinach, here is the good news. Spinach is one of the most nutritious vegetables ever grown. It has the ability to protect against cancer, it is a very potent anti-oxidant, it is great for healthy nerves. Spinach is high in calcium and magnesium. The folic acid in spinach can help to prevent birth defects. Other important factors are spinach's high fiber content, vitamin C, Iron, K, B and amino acids. No wonder Popeye did so well with eating spinach. It is always best to buy loose spinach, so that you can inspect the leaves. The leaves should be a dark green color and have a rubbery texture. Fresh, New Jersey grown spinach is said to be safe from the e-coli strain effecting California spinach. Spinach makes a great vegetable to be grown in your own garden or even in a flower box inside your house.

Thought of the Week: "If I could live my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek diseased tissue, rather than being the cause of diseased tissue; e.g. Mosquitoes seek stagnant water, but do not cause the pool of water to become stagnant."----Rudolf Virchow

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: "Symptoms can serve as a message that something needs to be changed in one's life. If we only treat the illness, it can linger or recur until the message is heeded."----Dennis Jaffe, Ph.D

Chiropractic care does not treat symptoms, chiropractic addresses the cause of symptoms.

Omega 6 Fats

Omega 6 fats are found mostly in cereal, whole grain breads, most vegetable oils, eggs, poultry and baked goods. On the surface, the list of food sources high in Omega 6 fats does not sound like it is bad for you. The problem is, that we, as a nation consume too much Omega 6 fats as compared to Omega 3 fats. The balance ratio between the two fats is extremely important for good health. When Omega 6 fats are the primary fat, the body produces inflammation. Inflammation in the body is the root of many diseases including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and arthritis. Western diets typically have an Omega 6 to Omega 3 ration of over 10-1. The ideal ratio should be 4-1. Omega 3 fats have been shown to produce chemicals in the body that actually fight inflammation and disease. Omega 3 fats are the fats found in fish oil, flax seeds and walnuts. A recent article in Science Daily reported that a diet rich in Omega 3 fats worked better for preventing death then placing heart attack defibrillators in homes. Omega 3 fats had 8 times the impact of distributing defibrillators and was cost effective, as it would cost $5.8 million a year to distribute fish oil to 100,000 people compared to $201 million for defibrillators. It most be noted that fish oil is not a replacement for a defibrillator during an actual heart attack, but a prevention to having heart attacks.

Thought for the Week: "Great spirits have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly." ----- Albert Einstein,

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: The Nervous system controls the function of every thing in the body. To be healthy, everything in the body must function properly. Chiropractic care improves the function of the nervous system, thus fostering health in the body.

Lose Weight or Die!!!!!

The New England Journal of Medicine published a Study on 8/24/06 concerning the relationship of disease, death and being overweight. The results were not shocking. What was shocking was what was considered overweight. If a person is 30lbs overweight, they are not just over weight they are considered obese. According to the height and weight chart of the Dietary Guidelines Committe of 1995, a healthy weight for a 6 foot tall male is 150-180lbs and a 5'4" female should weigh between 115lbs.-125lbs. These ranges also depend on bone structure, the larger bone structure would weigh near the top end of the range. The scary statistics are as follows. The National Cancer institute found that those who were somewhat overweight at age 50 had a 20-40% chance of early death, while those in the obese category had a 100-200% higher risk of death. 527,000 people, over a ten year period were examined for this study. Being overweight increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease and gout. On the bright side, a weight loss of of only 10 percent gets the health ball rolling and statistically starts to decrease the risk for disease.

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: "There is one cause of disease----The body's inability to comprehend itself or its environment. There is only one cure for disease------The body's ability to heal itself. There is only one thing a Doctor can do for a patient--------Remove an obstruction from healing, thus facilitating it."-----Fred Barge, DC

Healthy Mind, Health Body

The power of the mind cannot be ignored. Studies have shown that people who are positive and optimistic tend to be healthier and when sick, recover faster. New evidence shows a much greater link to the mind-body connection. Recent research in healthcare has been centered on the placebo. The placebo is a sugar pill used as a control in drug trials and medical research. To test the results of a product, a patient is given the real drug and a different patient is given a placebo, but is told it is the real drug. The researchers can see how the drug works compared to a person who isn't taking it. The problem is that in all studies, a percentage of the control or placebo group shows the same improvements as the person taking the drug. Now, Pet scanners and MRI's of the brain show that the fake treatment leads to changes in brain chemistry. This research shows that our thoughts may actually interact with the brain in a positive way, according to the researchers at U of P. This research may lead to ways to teach people how to utilize the healing powers of the brain.

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: "If I were asked to briefly define the Chiropractic Philosophy, I should say Chiropractic Philosophy is the Philosophy of Cause." -------Joy Loban, PH.C.

Chiropractic care is not a treatment for symptoms, but a correction of the cause.

ADHD

The school year is upon us and many parents have children that have been diagnosed ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Recent research, previously mentioned, cited studies proving that Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation (fish oil) was more effective than the narcotic drug, Ritalin. In addition, many cases of ADHD are related to food allergies. The most common culprits were sugar, preservatives and artificial food coloring and flavoring. Most parents have found that when these food addititives were removed the child's behavior and learning ability improved. Neurologically, children with disruption in nerve flow (spinal nerve stress) may show a decrease in function throughout the body which may impair learning and effect behavior.

Thought for the Week: "Someone must teach new things, someone must take the abuse, someone must be ostracized, someone must be called a quack. Then out of it all comes a new truth to become part of us. Thus we receive new facts to make up our proud possession of knowledge." ------Fred Hart, Founder, National Health Federation

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to "suit" the environment.

Chiropractic care improves bodily function, enhances performance and improves quality of life!

Organic Food

Organic food is hard to find and is more expensive than "regular" food. So why purchase organic food? One main reason, drugs. Pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones are deadly ingredients found in the most common of foods. For example, in 1994, the FDA found high pesticide residues in some of the more popular breakfast cereals. Strawberries are considered the single most pesticide laden product in the USA. Pesticides were found in more than half of the baby foods tested. 5% of the peach crop is considered contaminated with excessive pesticides. Most dairy farms inject their cows with bovine growth hormone to boost milk production. Bananas are produced with the pesticide benomyl which is linked to birth defects. To make matters worse, pesticides that are banned for use in the United States are still being sold for use in other countries. Imported grapes and melons have shown high levels of pesticides that are banned in the USA. Another reason to eat organic is that the organic vegetables and fruits have been shown to have a higher nutrient value than inorganic.

Thought for the Week: "Every time people chose organic food they are choosing the kind of world that they want to live in by voting with their fork." ----------Marion Nestle, Center for Science in the Public Interest

Chiropractic Tip of the Week: "The beauty of chiropractic is the fact that it works with natural means. It puts nothing new into the body, nor does it take away any gland or organ. Chiropractic simply releases life forces within the body, setting free the energy through the nerves, letting nature do its work." -----BJ Palmer, DC
