Cholesterol....Good or Evil?

Cholesterol is a natural substance in the body. 80% of cholesterol is manufactured by the liver, with the additional 20% coming from diet. Cholesterol is essential in building the membranes of our body's cells and it is also an important part of our sexual hormones. Cholesterol also aids in the digestion and breakdown of foods. Cholesterol can become a problem when too much low (LDL) lipoproteins are present. The LDL causes plaque to appear on the artery walls, which can lead to heart disease. High Lipoproteins (HDL levels) are the good lipids. High HDLs rid the body of excess cholesterol. The levels of LDLs and HDLs are controlled by diet. Cholesterol is a normal and needed substance in the body, it is the overproduction of cholesterol that casues problems with our health. A diet high in fiber, low in salt, low in heated fats and low in animal and dairy products is beneficial in fighting "high cholesterol levels".

Chiropractic care....Mainstream

A recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer titled, Alternative medicine gaining acceptance , mentioned chiropractic. The author said that "Chiropractic, once considered alternative, is now considered mainstream, or nearly so." As far as I am concerned, chiropractic care has never been an alternative health field. Based on its philosophy, chiropractic is different and it always has been. For example, an alternative to drugs is to try an herbal supplement or a homeopathic remedy. Alternative approaches looking for the same result, alleviation of symptoms. Chiropractic's purpose, to adjust the spine to improve spinal function, performance and health is a separate and distinct field because symptoms are not the concern, structural integrity is. Anybody, with or without symptoms can utilize chiropractic care for the same reason, spinal alignment. If you are looking for an alternative to proper spinal alignment, there isn't one, thus chiropractic's uniqueness.

One additional note: Thanks to all of you, and your dedicated devotion to health, chiropractic is now considered mainstream! Thank you for choosing chiropractic care.

Pump down the volume

An estimated 40 million people in the United States have high blood pressure. High Blood pressure causes the heart to work harder to pump the blood, which can lead to heart failure and stroke. High blood pressure is often called the silent killer because it is usually asymptomatic. It is important to have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis to help prevent heart disease. A diet low in salt, low in animal fats, high in fiber and omega 3 fatty acids (fish oils) can help lower blood pressure and help fight heart disease. It is extremely beneficial to keep your body weight down and exercise regularly. The more fit you are, the stronger your heart.

No Monkey Business Here!

Bananas are not just for monkeys. One of the healthiest foods a person could eat, bananas are helpful to many bodily disorders. Bananas have been used in the treatment of depression, PMS, anemia, high blood pressure, heartburn, morning sickness and stomach ulcers. Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose. Combined with fiber, bananas give an instant and sustained boost of energy. Two bananas provide enough energy for a 90-minute exercise session. When compared to an apple, bananas have four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. Bananas are also rich in potassium. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a banana a day will keep the doctors, nurses, and psychologists away. Everyone but the chiropractor, who takes care of banana eating, healthy people on a preventative basis.
